I'm a Professor in the Vancouver School of Economics at UBC and a Faculty Research Fellow at the NBER. I also serve as a member of the Canadian Macroeconomics Study Group (CMSG) Secretariat; Canadian Economics Association Board of Directors; Labour Market Information Council Experts Panel; and as the Academic Director of the Centre for Innovative Data in Economics Research (CIDER). My research is in macroeconomics and labour economics, with work on automation and the decline of middle-class jobs, recessions and jobless recoveries, and youth unemployment. I was the first recipient of the Bank of Canada Governor's Award, and I have served as a visiting scholar or consultant with the Federal Reserve Banks of Chicago, Minneapolis, and St Louis, the Reserve Bank of Australia, and the Bank of Canada.
